Pathways to Painting
Artists develop their own style over their career. What they start with may be far different to the work they do in later years, changing many times along the way. Through experimentation and experience, they discover the style, medium and subject matter that they want to pursue. They’ll pass through many pathways as they explore their chosen style. Similarly, artists may use tools such as plein air, sketches, collage, photographs, mark-making and mix medium to begin a work. This beginning may have no resemblance to the finished piece – it provides inspiration.
Felicia Finlayson and Marilyn Ross share a studio space at One + 2 Studios in Lilyfield. Both artists feel that their goal is to create a semi-conscious path that invites the viewer in, guiding them around the artwork, making a few stops along the way and eventually landing at the end destination: the focal point. They do this in a way that is interesting whilst providing a sense of flow through the image. Although sometimes it may be interrupted by line – both broken and solid, collage, colour and brush-stroke variation, the pathway remains. Felicia’s unique form of landscape painting is influenced by sketches and small paintings performed en plein-air (in landscape). She captures not only the scenery but also the feeling and emotion she experienced on-site whilst depicting the sense of the place. The challenge is to bring this into the studio when creating larger scale works. Every painting for Felicia is experimental, which give way to a fresh new and exciting image. Her use of colour saturation, lighting, focus and manipulation of the scene, as necessary, adds vitality and originality to her work.
Marilyn mainly works spontaneously, building an energy and excitement whilst she is painting. Each mark pushes her onto the next – a moveable surface. Marilyn has her own style and thoughts around abstraction. She experiments with colour combinations and texture development, either by varying the thickness of paint, or introducing collage to add depth and dimension. Her large work is often developed from a small collage she has created previously using magazines, old paintings and writing on paper.
Felicia and Marilyn will show some of their experimental work as well as their larger final paintings.
